Between 2000 and 2004 I worked as a counsellor in The London Haven, London, with women and their families who were affected by breast cancer. My experience there allowed me to understand that many people are swept up by the process of tests, diagnosis, treatment and recovery. However, once this process is over, many people feel abandoned and alone with their anxieties about the future. Counselling can help to manage the feelings of grief and worry at this time. Counselling can also offer independent support at the time of diagnosis and during the process of treatment.
I worked for Royal Navy as an in-house therapist for the Naval Personal and Family Service in Portsmouth for eight years with serving people and their families. I am now a Co-Director of Seaforth Counselling, an inependent counselling service for Naval serving personnel, their partners and adult children. I have specialist knowledge about the effect of deployments on individuals and couples, how the demands of forces life can affect families and the personal problems that many members of the Armed Forces meet when serving.
Stress or Anxiety
Many people suffer from the symptoms of stress and anxiety, such as problems with sleeping, tiredness, repetitive thoughts and feelings and irritability. I have training in CBT which has a proven positive effect on stress and anxiety. It can also improve self-esteem and the ability to respond to the demands of others –whether at work or home.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
I work with people who suffer from PTSD using EMDR – a specialist treatment for PTSD. I have particular experience of using it to help after car accidents and birth trauma, although it can be used after most forms of trauma. It can have a dramatic positive effect on the symptoms of trauma, including sleep disturbance, nightmares, flashbacks and depression.
Understanding your Eating
Problems with over or under eating are very common and often have their roots in other life experiences. Bulimia and compulsive eating can be helped by exploring these experiences and then understanding how to take appropriate action. As a Licensed Practitioner in Understanding your Eating I can assist you in making better choices about eating wisely and improve your self-esteem.
My original Relate training, and almost 30 years of experience in working with couples, has given me an unique insight into the problems and difficulties faced by people in relationships. I can offer relationship counselling to single people, straight and gay couples, and those considering ending a relationship. Counselling for relationship problems can allow individuals and couples to reflect on and understand issues in order to take the appropriate action for their needs. I can support you throughout this process and enable the change that you most want.
